Core Principles of the Montessori Method

Respect for the Child

Respect for the child is the major pillar of the Montessori Method. As Dr. Maria Montessori observed, “Children are human beings to whom respect is due, superior to us by reason of their innocence and of the greater possibilities of their future.”

We do not interrupt children when they are concentrating. We give them the freedom to make choices, to do things for themselves, and to learn for themselves.

The Absorbent Mind

The first six years of life are crucial. During this period, the child has an “absorbent mind” – the ability to absorb knowledge from their surroundings quickly and effortlessly.

The Prepared Environment

The classroom is not the teacher’s domain, but the child’s. It is constructed to facilitate independent learning and exploration. Every item has a purpose and a place.

  • Order: Everything has its place.
  • Beauty: The environment is aesthetically pleasing.
  • Simplicity: Not cluttered, just enough materials.
  • Accessibility: Everything is at the child’s height.

Sensitive Periods

Children pass through specific stages in their development when they are most ready to learn certain skills. These are known as sensitive periods.
